Mangaluru: Admissions to I PU courses have begun following the Class 10 results (SSLC, ICSE, CBSE), with colleges reporting a rise in applications for science and commerce streams.
As in previous years, combinations with computer science in both science and commerce streams remain the most preferred. Science continues to see the highest demand, followed by commerce, while humanities has the least takers. Private and aided colleges have reported heavy footfall, especially for science courses, which are popular among students aspiring to careers in medicine, engineering, and other professional fields.
A spokesperson from one of the city's oldest PU colleges said admissions are nearly complete, with higher applications than previous years. Online interviews were conducted for students abroad, and those unable to attend in person, and all streams, including humanities, are already full. Other unaided colleges reported a similar trend, though humanities continues to see lower demand. At Vidvath PU College, Belthangady, PCMC is the most sought-after combination, followed by PCMB.
Commerce has also seen steady demand, driven by students aspiring to careers in business, finance, and management.
Government PU colleges in the district are yet to see a similar response. Jayanand Suvarna, principal of Government PU College, Shakti Nagar, said only 10–12 applications have been received so far, with a similar trend across other government colleges. He noted that many students take up part-time jobs after SSLC exams, and seek admission after June, though colleges are set to reopen on May 25.
Unaided PU colleges begin tentative admissions early in the year, with seats booked based on past academic performance and confirmed after board results are announced.
